Battery is where this category has moved fastest. A modern 56V or 80V two stage machine now throws comparably to a mid range gas engine and clears a two car driveway on a single charge.
Why battery has taken over the suburban driveway
There is no fuel to stabilise, no oil to change, no carburettor to gum up over an eight month off season, and no pull cord at minus twenty. You press a button and it runs. For a typical two car driveway, that convenience now comes with almost no performance penalty.
The gap that used to exist has closed because of brushless motors and higher pack voltages. An 80V two stage machine puts serious torque into the auger, and the impeller spins fast enough to throw 10 metres or more.
Voltage, and what it actually means
40V suits single stage machines and short paved driveways. 56V and 60V covers most residential two stage work. 80V and dual battery systems handle wide clearing paths and heavy wet snow.
Amp hours matter more than voltage for runtime. Two 5Ah packs on an 80V machine clear substantially more than one. In a heavy snowfall region, budget for a second battery from the start rather than discovering the limit mid storm.
The honest limitations
- Back to back storms. If you clear twice in a day, one pack will not do it. A spare solves this.
- Very long driveways. Beyond roughly 30 metres, gas still makes more sense.
- Deep wet snow past 40cm. Achievable, but you will work the pack hard.
- Cold storage. Keep packs above 20 percent and store them indoors, not in an unheated garage.
Which platform
EGO Power+ generally leads on throwing distance. Greenworks leads on price. Ryobi, DeWalt and Milwaukee make sense if you already own their battery platform, since packs carry across your other tools, which materially changes the real cost.
