If you get more than about 100cm of snow a year, or your driveway is anything other than smooth pavement, the answer is two stage. That is the short version. The long version is worth five minutes, because this single decision determines whether you are satisfied with your machine in January or quietly furious at it.
The difference in one paragraph
A single stage snow blower uses one rubber tipped auger that does two jobs at once: it scoops the snow and throws it. That auger touches the ground. A two stage machine splits the work. A steel auger collects snow and feeds it to the centre of the housing, then a separate high speed impeller behind it fires the snow up the chute. The auger is held clear of the ground on adjustable skid shoes, and the wheels are powered.

Why the ground contact matters more than anything
Because a single stage auger touches the ground, it pulls the machine forward on its own. That is why single stage blowers are light and need no drive system. It is also why they can only be used on smooth paved surfaces. On gravel, interlock, or a cracked asphalt drive, that spinning rubber auger picks up stones and fires them at whatever is in front of it, which may be your garage door, your car, or a neighbour.
A two stage machine rides on skid shoes with the auger held above the surface. That is the entire reason it is safe on gravel. If your driveway is not smooth pavement, the decision is already made for you, and no amount of engine size on a single stage machine changes it.
The end of driveway ridge
This is the part that decides how people actually feel about their purchase. Every time the municipal plow goes past, it seals the bottom of your driveway with a dense, compacted, often half frozen wall of snow. It is nothing like the fluffy snow on the rest of the drive.
A single stage machine tends to ride up and over that ridge rather than bite into it, because it has no weight, no powered wheels and no way to force itself forward. You end up finishing the last two metres with a shovel, which is precisely the job you bought a machine to avoid.
A two stage machine has powered wheels or tracks, real weight, and a taller intake. It walks into the ridge and chews through it. If your street gets plowed, this alone is usually worth the price difference.
Wet snow and why two stages throw further
Separating collection from ejection lets the two parts run at different speeds. The auger turns slowly with a lot of torque, so it can grind through heavy, wet, compacted snow without stalling. The impeller spins fast, so it can throw that snow 10 to 15 metres.
A single stage machine has to do both jobs at one speed. Fast enough to throw means too fast to grip heavy snow, so in wet March snow a single stage tends to pack the housing and dribble snow out of the chute rather than throwing it clear. You then stop, shut it down and clear the chute by hand, repeatedly.
Where single stage genuinely wins
This is not a one sided comparison. Single stage machines are the right answer for a real set of Canadian homes:
- Smooth paved driveway, one or two cars wide, no gravel anywhere
- Under roughly 20cm of snow per storm on average
- Limited storage, because they are dramatically smaller and lighter
- Decks, walkways and stairs, where their light weight and ground contact are advantages
- Coastal BC and southern Ontario in a mild year, where total annual snowfall is modest
They are also far cheaper, start more easily, and are much simpler to manoeuvre. A good single stage on the right driveway is a genuinely better tool than an oversized two stage you struggle to turn around.

- Gravel, interlock or unpaved surfaces, for the safety reason above
- Long or wide driveways, where powered wheels stop it becoming a workout
- Any street the plow services, because of the ridge
- Quebec, Atlantic Canada, the Prairies, snowbelt Ontario, or anywhere clearing 150cm or more a year
- Deep drifts, where intake height matters more than engine displacement
What about three stage
Three stage machines add an accelerator auger that feeds the impeller faster. They clear meaningfully quicker in deep snow and cost meaningfully more. For most homeowners a good two stage is the right answer. Three stage earns its price on long rural driveways and in heavy snowfall regions where you are clearing repeatedly through a storm.

Three stage, explained properly
A three stage machine keeps the two stage arrangement and adds an accelerator auger in the centre of the housing, turning at high speed perpendicular to the main auger. Its job is to force snow into the impeller faster than gravity and the main auger alone would manage.
The practical effect is throughput rather than throw distance. A three stage machine ingests deep snow without the main auger bogging, which means you can walk faster through heavy accumulation. On a 30cm fall it makes little difference. On 60cm of wet snow at the end of a long driveway, it is the difference between one steady pass and repeatedly stopping to let the machine catch up.
They cost meaningfully more and add weight. Buy one if you regularly clear deep accumulations on a long driveway, or if you are in a snowbelt where 40cm plus events are routine. For a suburban two car driveway they are more machine than the job needs.
Worked examples by driveway type
Townhouse, paved, one car wide, southern Ontario
A 21 inch single stage or a 40V battery single stage. Storage space is usually the binding constraint, and neither gravel nor a serious plow ridge is in play. Anything larger is awkward to turn and store.
Two car suburban driveway, paved, plow-serviced street

Tracked two stage. Wheels lose traction on a slope precisely when you need the machine to pull itself forward, and a tracked unit turns an unpleasant job into an ordinary one.

Two regrets come up repeatedly. The first is buying single stage for a gravel driveway because it was cheaper, then discovering it cannot be used safely. That is not a preference, it is a hard constraint.

Resale
Two stage machines hold value considerably better than single stage, because the buyer pool is larger and the machines last longer. A well maintained two stage unit ten years old still sells readily in autumn. A single stage machine of the same age with worn paddles is worth very little. If you expect to sell on, that gap is part of the real cost.
