A gas snow blower, a cordless battery snow blower and a corded electric snow blower all clear snow. They fail in different ways, in different weather, on different driveways. Start here.

Why a gas snow blower still wins on a rural drive

A gas powered snow blower carries its energy as liquid fuel, so the machine pulls a sustained load for an hour without fading. A two stage gas snow blower has enough impeller speed to throw wet, compacted ridge snow clear of the driveway instead of dribbling it onto the edge. Our range runs from a 21 inch, 196 cc single stage at $549 to a 42 inch, 420 cc tracked stand on unit at $5,999.

The cost is maintenance. Fuel stabiliser in the fall, an oil change once a season, a carburettor clean every few years. In exchange you get a machine still running in fifteen years that does not care how deep the snow is.

What a cordless snow blower actually clears

A modern battery snow blower on a 48V, 80V or 100V platform clears six to eight inches without drama, starts instantly at minus twenty, and can run inside an open garage. Greenworks 80V and Ryobi 40V are worth considering if you already own batteries on those systems, because the packs are the expensive part.

Manufacturer runtimes assume dry powder. In wet March snow the same machine draws two to three times the current, so plan on a third and fourth battery for a long drive.

When a corded electric snow blower is the right answer

An electric snow blower is the cheapest honest way to clear a short city driveway, a deck, a set of steps or a walkway. Nothing to charge, nothing to winterise. For a townhouse it is very hard to beat.

The cord is a real limit. Use a cold weather rated 12 gauge lead, keep it behind you, and never run a corded electric snow blower off a lightweight indoor extension. Outdoor electrical guidance in Canada comes from the Electrical Safety Authority.

SINGLE STAGE VS TWO STAGE VS THREE STAGE

Which stage does your driveway need?

Stage count is the auger and impeller arrangement, not a quality grade. It decides how deep and how wet the snow can be before the machine stops throwing and starts pushing.

STAGE ONESingle stage snow blower

32 inch motorised brush and 22 inch snow blower two in one machine with a 212 cc engine
A two in one: brush for a light dusting, auger for the real thing.

Where the real cut off sits

A single stage snow blower uses one rubber paddle auger that both gathers and throws. Because the paddle touches the ground it also drags the machine forward, which is why single stage units feel light and need no drive system. That same contact is why they must never be used on gravel.

A two stage snow blower separates the jobs. A slow steel auger gathers snow and feeds a fast impeller, which does the throwing. Adjustable skid shoes hold the auger above the surface, so gravel stays where it belongs. This is the class most Canadian driveways need, and it is the class that handles the ridge. A three stage snow blower adds an accelerator shaft between the two, chopping and pre feeding so the impeller never chokes.

SIZING

What size snow blower do I need?

Width is a time calculation. Stage count is a capability question. Get those two right and engine size takes care of itself.

21 inch single stage snow blower sized for a short two car driveway
A 21 inch machine is fourteen passes on a 40 foot double drive.

Pace off your driveway, divide by the clearing width, and you have the number of passes. A 40 foot double driveway at 21 inches is roughly fourteen passes. The same driveway at 28 inches is ten. That difference is about fifteen minutes on a heavy morning, every heavy morning, for the life of the machine.

Against that, wider machines are heavier to turn at the end of each pass and harder to store. A 34 inch two stage snow blower will not fit through a standard garden gate. Measure the gate before you measure the driveway, and measure the shed door if the machine has to live in a shed.

The mistake we watch people make every October is buying on engine size. A 252 cc engine on a 24 inch housing is a different machine from the same engine on a 34 inch housing, because the wider unit asks the same power to move half again as much snow. The second mistake is buying for the worst storm of the decade instead of the typical storm of the season. Use the snow depth finder above, then read the best snow blowers in Canada guide.

40 inch snow blower attachment mounted on a compact tractor with a three point hitch
SNOW BLOWER ATTACHMENTS

If you already own the machine, buy the attachment

We stock one attachment: a 40 inch blower head that fits the Ducar DCS power unit, at $1,029. If you already own the DCS carrier, that is a far cheaper route to a wide clearing machine than buying a second complete unit.

Tractor, ATV and skid steer snow blower attachments are a genuinely useful category, and we do not stock them. Three point hitch and PTO driven units, quad mounts and high flow skid steer heads all exist, but fitment depends on your host machine rather than on the attachment, so buying one blind is how people end up with a unit that will not mount.

If you are shopping for one elsewhere, confirm three things first: the hitch category or mount pattern, the hydraulic flow rate your machine actually delivers, and whether you have the ballast to keep traction under load. Send those numbers through the contact page and we will tell you honestly whether what you are looking at will fit, even though you will be buying it somewhere else.

EIGHT BRANDS, ONE PARTS SHELF

The brands Snow Blowers Canada stocks

Snow Blowers Canada does not pretend to be an exclusive dealer for anyone, and we do not write brand pages that are really a sales pitch.

Snow Blowers Canada carries Ducar, Snow Joe and Greenworks machines, and a growing range of parts that fit Toro, Ariens, Husqvarna, Honda, Cub Cadet, Craftsman, Poulan Pro, Yard Machines, MTD and Briggs and Stratton powered units. On the cordless side, EGO Power+, Ryobi 40V, DeWalt 60V and Milwaukee platforms are represented in the parts and accessories catalogue even where we do not stock the complete machine.

If a Toro snow blower or an Ariens machine is the better fit for your driveway than anything on our shelf, our buying guide says so. What Snow Blowers Canada does better than a big box retailer is stock the wear parts that keep those machines running in February, when the shelves everywhere else are empty.

SNOW BLOWER PARTS AND REPAIR

The four parts that strand a machine in January

Shear pins, drive belts, auger paddles and scraper bars. We stock 244 snow blower replacement parts with the manufacturer stock numbers printed on every listing.

All snow blower parts

Every part listing at Snow Blowers Canada prints the manufacturer stock number, the profile and the length, because ordering a belt by eye is how people end up with three wrong belts in a drawer. Our snow blower repair guide shows where the stock number is stamped on each common component.

The repair guide covers the common faults in order of likelihood: will not start, auger will not turn, machine throws snow only a few feet, chute will not rotate, drive slips. Before you book a shop visit in the middle of a storm week, work through that list. Safety guidance for powered snow removal is published by the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety.

Snow blower sale and clearance pricing lands in late summer and early autumn, when distributors clear the previous model year. Our where to buy guide is honest about when another retailer has the better deal.

CANADA IS NOT ONE SNOW MARKET

Snowfall by province, and what it means

Look at the average depth of a single event rather than the seasonal total. A city with 200 cm over forty small storms needs a different machine from one that gets it in twelve.

British ColumbiaWet, heavy, infrequent. Favours a machine that handles moisture rather than depth. The Interior runs deeper than the Lower Mainland.
PrairiesDry and drifting. A two stage throws it beautifully, then the wind refills the driveway behind you. Width matters more than power.
Ontario and QuebecModerate depth with the plow ridge as the deciding factor. This is two stage country for anyone on a municipal street.
Atlantic CanadaDepth, wind and salt air. Rust protection and a machine that clears 18 inches in one pass are both worth paying for.
Lake effect beltsDepth repeatedly, sometimes daily. Only a large two stage or a three stage keeps up without you clearing twice a day.
TerritoriesExtreme cold changes everything. Battery capacity drops hard, so gas with electric start and a fresh battery is the reliable answer.

Thirty year snowfall normals for your own station are published free by Environment and Climate Change Canada, and they are worth five minutes before you spend fifteen hundred dollars.

BUYING FROM US

Shipping, warranty and the honest caveats

Shipping

Every price at Snow Blowers Canada is in Canadian dollars. No currency conversion at checkout and no surprise duty at the door, because the stock is here. Shipping is Canada wide and machines over $999 ship free. Machines move by pallet on a truck with a tail lift, so the carrier calls ahead. Detail is on the shipping and delivery page.

Warranty and returns

Every machine carries its full manufacturer warranty, and we keep the wear parts for what we sell so a claim is not the only route to a working snow blower. Thirty days to change your mind, longer for a fault. See the warranty policy and the returns policy.

Safety, honestly

Never clear a clogged chute by hand. Use the clearing tool that ships with the machine, engine off, auger stopped. Impeller injuries remain the most common serious accident with this equipment, and they happen to experienced operators who took one shortcut. Ask us on the contact page before you order if you are unsure.

Why buy from Snow Blowers Canada

Snow Blowers Canada is a Canadian store holding Canadian stock, which is a duller sentence than most retailers write and a more useful one. Nothing crosses a border to reach you, so there is no currency conversion at the checkout and no duty arriving at the door afterwards.

Three things separate Snow Blowers Canada from a big box aisle. We hold 244 lines of wear parts with the manufacturer stock number on every listing, because a machine you cannot get a belt for in February is not a machine. Snow Blowers Canada is not an exclusive dealer for anybody, so our guides name Toro, Ariens and Honda where those are the better answer. And we size machines on depth and driveway rather than on horsepower.

Everything Snow Blowers Canada sells is priced in Canadian dollars and shipped Canada wide, with free freight over $999. Machines move by pallet on a truck with a tail lift and the carrier calls ahead. If a question is not answered anywhere on the site, the contact page reaches somebody at Snow Blowers Canada who has taken these machines apart.

PLAIN ENGLISH

Snow blower or snow thrower: one machine, two names

The single most common question we get, settled in a paragraph.

There is no mechanical difference between a snow blower and a snow thrower. The two words describe the same machine, and every manufacturer uses them interchangeably. If you have been searching snow thrower blower, snowblower snow blower or snow blower snow thrower and getting different results each time, that is search engines guessing, not a real product distinction.

Where the words do carry a hint of meaning, it is this. People tend to say snow blower thrower or simply thrower when they picture a lighter single stage machine that scoops and throws in one motion, and snow blower when they picture a heavier two stage machine with a separate auger and impeller. That is habit rather than specification. On a spec sheet, snow blower vs snow thrower is a distinction without a difference, and the difference between snow blower and snow thrower that actually changes your purchase is the number of stages, not the noun.

So when you are weighing snow thrower vs blower, ignore the label and read three numbers: clearing width, engine size or voltage, and stage count. Those decide what the machine does on your driveway. The buying guide works through all three, and the sizing guide turns them into a machine that matches your property.

HONEST COMPARISON

Snow blower or snow shovel, and where a snow blower shovel fits

Three tools, three jobs. Buying the wrong one is the most expensive mistake in this category.

A manual snow shovel costs almost nothing and works on steps, a small landing and a car. It stops being reasonable at about one car length of driveway, or the first time you face a plow ridge. That is the point where snow blower vs shovel stops being a preference and becomes a back injury.

Between the two sits the powered snow shovel, which people search for as a snow blower shovel, a snow shovel snow blower or simply a shovel snow blower. It is a narrow, light, usually cordless tool with a rubber paddle, typically 10 to 13 inches wide. It clears a walkway, a set of steps and a single car apron quickly and quietly, and it is genuinely the right answer for a condo, a townhouse or a second entrance. It is not a small snow blower: there is no impeller, so it clears a path rather than throwing snow across a lawn, and it will not touch a plow ridge.

So the honest hierarchy is this. Steps, decks and a car: a manual shovel or a powered snow shovel. A walkway or one car apron: a powered snow shovel. A real driveway, in Canada, cleared repeatedly from December to March: a snow blower. If you are still weighing snow blower or shovel for a driveway you clear twenty times a winter, the machine wins on time alone, and the sizing guide will tell you how wide it needs to be.

WHAT WE DO NOT SELL

Handheld, backpack, car and truck snow blowers

A straight answer on the small and vehicle mounted machines people search for.

Searches for a handheld snow blower, a hand held snow blower, a backpack snow blower or a portable snow blower usually end in disappointment, so here is the honest position. A true handheld snow blower does not meaningfully exist for Canadian snow. What people find under those terms is either a leaf blower being sold optimistically for a light dusting, or a cordless powered snow shovel. The second one is real and it works. The first one moves powder off a step and nothing more.

The same applies to a car snow blower or a portable car snow blower. For clearing a vehicle, a brush and a light powered shovel are the correct tools; nothing with an auger belongs near paintwork. A truck snow blower, a snow blower for truck use or a truck mounted snow blower is commercial equipment mounted to a vehicle or loader, and a three point snow blower is a tractor implement. We do not stock vehicle mounted or commercial machines, and we would rather say so than sell you something that will not fit.

What we do stock, and what genuinely covers the small end, is the cordless snow shovel range below, plus compact single stage machines. If your requirement is portability rather than capacity, start there and read the buying guide before spending.

WHAT IS ON THE SHELF

Snow blower brands we actually carry

Three names, and the honest reason for each.

We would rather stock a few ranges properly than list twenty and hold none of them. Every machine on this site is a Ducar, a Snow Joe or a Greenworks, and the parts catalogue is built around those ranges plus PowerSmart, so a repair in year six is an order rather than a hunt.

Ducar. The petrol lane, and 15 of our machines. This is where the two stage units live, from the 21 inch 212cc single stage up through 28 inch and 34 inch two stage machines to the 42 inch tracked stand on unit. If you have gravel, a plow ridge or a long lane, this is the range to read first.

PowerSmart. Not a machine brand here, a parts brand. We stock 22 PowerSmart service parts, including carburettors, auger and drive cables, friction wheel assemblies and gearbox assemblies, listed by manufacturer stock number on the parts catalogue.

Snow Joe. The cordless and corded lane, 25 machines, and the source of most of our snow shovels. People search snow blower joe, sno joe snow blower and sun joe snow blower interchangeably; it is the same family. Best for paved driveways, short lanes and anyone who wants to press a button rather than manage fuel.

Greenworks. The higher voltage battery lane, 27 machines, including 60V and 80V. Searched as green works snow blower, greenwork snow blower or green work snow blower. This is where cordless stops being a compromise and starts competing with a small petrol machine.

We do not stock Toro, Ariens, MTD, Yard Machines, Cub Cadet or Honda, and we will not pretend otherwise. If you need a part for one of those, tell us the model and we will say plainly whether we can help.

KEEP IT RUNNING

Snow blower parts, components and accessories

Two hundred and forty four service parts, listed by manufacturer stock number.

A machine is only as good as the parts you can get for it in February, which is why the snow blower parts catalogue is as deliberate as the machine range. Searches for snow blower components, snow blower accessories or simply snow blower part usually mean one of a small number of things, and we stock all of them: shear pins and cotter pins, auger and drive belts, rubber paddles, scraper bars, skid shoes, friction discs, chute cranks and deflectors, control cables, bearings and seals.

The engine side is covered too. A snow blower carburetor is the single most searched part in the category, because untreated fuel left over the summer is the most common reason a machine will not start in December. Alongside it we list fuel lines, filters, shut off valves, primer bulbs, spark plugs and recoil starters, so a snow blower pull cord replacement is a part number rather than a workshop visit.

Then the wear items people forget until it is cold: snow blower tires and wheels, snow blower blades and cutter bars, snow blower covers for summer storage, a snow blower light for early mornings, and fuel stabilizer for snow blower use that should go in the tank in April rather than October.

Everything is matched by stock number rather than by description, so you order the part that fits your unit and not one that merely looks similar. Start at the parts catalogue, or work through the repair guide if you are not yet sure which part has failed.

BEFORE YOU CALL ANYONE

Snow blower will not start, and other winter faults

The faults we are called about most, with the part that actually fixes each one.

Almost every snow blower no start call in December traces back to the same thing: fuel. Petrol left untreated over a Canadian summer separates and gums the carburettor, so the machine that ran perfectly in March will not start in December. The fix is preventative and it costs a few dollars. Add fuel stabilizer for snow blower storage in April, not October, and run the engine long enough to carry it through the carburettor.

Symptom Usual cause What fixes it
Snow blower will not start Untreated fuel left over the summer, or a blocked carburettor jet Fresh fuel plus stabiliser, then a carburettor clean or kit
Starts then dies, or revs up and down Blocked idle circuit, or a partly closed fuel valve Carburettor clean, and check the shut off valve is fully open
Engine turns over but there is no spark Fouled or failed spark plug, or a loose kill switch lead A new plug first, it is the cheapest thing in the box
Will not turn over at all Flooded engine, or the safety key is not seated Wait, then restart with the choke open and the key checked
Auger turns but throws poorly Worn belt, worn paddles or a seized idler pulley Belt and pulley together, or a paddle set
Machine will not move forward Glazed friction disc or a stretched drive cable Friction disc, or a cable adjustment
One side of the auger stops A sheared pin, usually taken in the plow ridge Shear pins, and never a bolt in place of one

Knowing how to clean snow blower carburetor internals is the single highest value repair skill in this category, and on most machines it is four bolts and an afternoon. If the machine still surges or runs rough afterwards, the jet is usually still partly blocked rather than the carburettor being dead.

Snow blower storage matters just as much as repair. Drain or stabilise the fuel, change the oil at the end of the season rather than the start, grease the chute collar, and keep the machine off a bare concrete floor. The maintenance schedule sets out the intervals, the repair guide works through faults in order of likelihood, and every part named above is stocked on the parts catalogue.

SIZE, PRICE AND COMFORT

The adjectives people search with, translated into an actual specification.

Most searches in this category are an adjective attached to a snow blower machine, and each adjective maps to a real number. A big snow blower or a large snow blower means clearing width, not engine size. The biggest snow blower we stock is 42 inches wide on tracks; the widest sensible choice for a normal home driveway is closer to 28 inches, because a wide machine you cannot turn or store stops being a saving.

How people describe it What that means Right for Typical price
Small and light 10 to 14 inch shovel, 18 to 20 inch single stage Steps, walkways, one car apron From about $200
Mid size 21 to 24 inch single or two stage A standard two car driveway About $550 to $1,300
Big 26 to 30 inch two stage Long or double width driveways, plow ridge About $1,300 to $2,200
Biggest we stock 34 to 42 inch two stage, some tracked Rural lanes, acreage, commercial yards About $2,000 to $6,000

An inexpensive snow blower is not the same as a cheap one. The affordable end of a good range is a corded electric or a compact single stage machine, and both are genuinely reliable within their limits. What fails early is an underspecified machine bought for the wrong driveway. If you are shopping a snow blower closeout or a sale, check the clearing width against your property first and the discount second. Our current pricing sits on the Canadian price guide and reduced machines on the sale page.

On stages, the phrasing varies but the machine does not. A stage 2 snow blower, a snow blower 2-stage and a two stage machine are identical: a separate auger and impeller, adjustable skid shoes, and the only type safe on gravel. Stage 1 means a single paddle that touches the ground. Stage 3 adds an accelerator for very heavy snow. The types guide covers the differences properly.

Comfort features are worth naming because they change how the machine feels at six in the morning. Heated hand grips, which people search as a heated snow blower or snow blower heated handles, are standard on several of our larger petrol units. A snow blower light, usually an LED in the dash, matters more than buyers expect on a dark driveway. Both are listed per machine rather than assumed.

Finally, the engine. A snow blower motor on a petrol machine is rated in cc, not horsepower, and on a cordless machine in volts and amp hours. Bigger numbers help in wet snow and on slopes; they do nothing for a light dusting. Read them alongside width rather than instead of it.

ASKED CONSTANTLY

Snow blower questions, answered honestly

What size snow blower do I need for a Canadian driveway?

Match clearing width to how long the job is, and stage count to how deep the snow gets. A two car driveway under six inches of typical snowfall is a 21 to 24 inch single stage snow blower. Anything deeper, or any driveway a municipal plow blocks, needs a two stage snow blower of 24 inches or more.

Is a battery snow blower powerful enough for Canada?

For a city driveway, yes. A 48V to 80V cordless snow blower clears six to eight inches comfortably and starts instantly in the cold. Where battery machines fall short is the packed ridge a plow leaves, and long rural laneways where you would need a third and fourth battery.

Gas or electric snow blower, which is cheaper to own?

An electric snow blower is cheaper to buy and has almost no running cost. A gas snow blower costs more up front and needs fuel stabiliser, oil and the occasional carburettor clean, but it will still be working in fifteen years and it does not care how deep the snow is.

What is the difference between a snow blower and a snow thrower?

In Canada the two terms are used interchangeably and every major manufacturer uses both. Strictly, a snow thrower is a single stage machine that throws snow with one auger, and a snow blower is a two stage machine that uses an auger and a separate impeller. In practice, read the specification, not the name on the box.

Do you ship snow blowers across Canada?

Yes, Canada wide, with free shipping on machines over 999 dollars. Prices are in Canadian dollars with no surprise duty at the door, and every machine carries the full manufacturer warranty.

When is the best time to buy a snow blower in Canada?

October. Snow blower sale and clearance pricing appears in late summer, stock is complete, and you are not in a queue behind everyone else after the first storm. By January the popular widths are gone and lead times run into weeks.

Can I use a snow blower on a gravel driveway?

Only a two stage or three stage machine. Adjustable skid shoes lift the auger above the surface so it does not pick up stones. A single stage snow blower has a paddle that touches the ground and will fire gravel like a projectile, so it must never be used on an unpaved surface.

What snow blower parts should I keep spare?

Shear pins, an auger belt and a set of rubber paddles or a scraper bar. Those four cover the overwhelming majority of mid winter breakdowns, they cost very little, and they are the first things to sell out everywhere once the season starts.
