When gas is still the right answer

If you clear a long laneway, live in a lake effect belt, or need to move heavy accumulation repeatedly through a storm, a 28 inch or wider gas two stage remains the machine that finishes the job without negotiation. Refuelling takes a minute, so there is no runtime ceiling.

The maintenance you are signing up for

  • Fresh fuel with stabiliser. Petrol older than about 30 days varnishes and causes most no start calls.
  • Annual oil change. Cheap, quick, and the single biggest factor in engine life.
  • Spark plug every year or two.
  • Shear pins checked before every storm, with the correct spares kept in the garage.

None of this is difficult, but it is not optional. If you would rather not do it, the battery range removes all of it.

Engine size and what actually matters

Displacement gets quoted constantly and matters less than people think. Intake height and clearing width determine how the machine copes with drifts and the plow ridge. A tall intake on a modest engine beats a big engine on a short intake in the conditions that actually cause trouble.
