If you already own a compact tractor, a three point hitch snow blower is the cheapest serious snow clearing you can buy. You have already paid for the engine, the drivetrain and the cab. The blower is just the implement on the end.
Rear mount or front mount
Most compact tractor blowers are rear mount, hung off the three point hitch and driven by the rear PTO. They are cheaper, simpler and far more common. You clear in reverse, which sounds awkward and takes about one storm to get used to. On a tractor with a comfortable seat swivel it is genuinely fine.
Front mount blowers run off a mid PTO or a front PTO and let you drive forward while clearing, which is easier on your neck and better visibility in a whiteout. They cost considerably more, need a compatible PTO, and are heavier on the front axle. If you clear a long laneway several times a week, the premium is worth it. For most acreages, rear mount is the sensible buy.
The three numbers that decide compatibility
This is where most purchases go wrong, so get these right before anything else.
1. Hitch category
Compact tractors are almost always Category 1. Sub compacts are often Category 0 or a limited Cat 1. Utility tractors move to Category 2. The pin diameters and spacing differ, and while adapter bushings exist for some combinations, buying the right category outright is far better than shimming a snow load.
2. PTO speed
Nearly all rear mount blowers expect 540 rpm. Some larger implements run 1000 rpm. Running a 540 implement at 1000 will destroy it quickly. Check your tractor PTO output and match it exactly.
3. Horsepower at the PTO
Engine horsepower is not the number that matters. PTO horsepower is, and it is typically 15 to 20 percent lower. As a working guide:

Undersizing the tractor means the blower bogs and you creep. Oversizing the blower relative to the tractor is the more common and more expensive mistake.
Match the blower to the tractor, not the driveway
A useful rule: the blower should be at least as wide as your rear tyre track, so you are not driving over unclear snow and packing it down. On most compact tractors that lands between 54 and 72 inches.
Chute rotation, and why it matters more than you think
Manual chute rotation means climbing off the tractor to change throw direction. On a long laneway where the wind changes or you need to alternate sides, that gets old within one winter. Hydraulic or electric chute rotation and deflector control let you adjust from the seat. On any blower you will use more than a handful of times a season, it is the upgrade most owners say they should have bought first.
Ballast and traction
A rear mount blower puts significant weight behind the rear axle, which unloads the front. Rear tyre ballast, wheel weights or a front loader as counterweight all help. Tyre chains transform traction on packed snow and ice, and on a tractor they are far less awkward than on a car. If your laneway has any slope, chains are not optional.
Skid shoes and the first storm
Set skid shoes high on gravel, roughly 25mm off the surface, for the first freeze. Once the base is frozen hard you can drop them closer. Setting them low on loose gravel in November is how people end up throwing stone through a garage door and rebuilding an auger.

What a tractor blower actually costs to run
The purchase price is only part of it. A three point hitch blower has no engine of its own, so there is no second carburettor, no second oil change and no second fuel system. That is a real saving over a decade compared with keeping a separate walk behind machine alive.
What does wear is the driveline. The PTO shaft shear bolt is the sacrificial part, exactly like a shear pin on a walk behind, and it is there to protect the gearbox when the auger hits something solid. Keep a handful in the tractor toolbox. The gearbox oil wants checking annually and changing every few seasons. Skid shoes and the scraper bar are consumables and cheap.
Budget for a spare shear bolt set, a gearbox oil change and a set of skid shoes over the first three winters and you have covered almost everything that will actually need attention.
Storage and the off season
A blower that spends eight months in a damp barn will seize where a stored one will not. Before it goes away for the summer: grease every zerk, run the auger briefly to distribute gearbox oil, wire brush and paint any bare steel inside the housing, and store it off the ground on blocks or a pallet so moisture is not wicking up into the auger bearings.
Rust inside the housing is not cosmetic. A pitted housing throws worse because snow keys into the roughness instead of sliding, and it packs far more readily in wet conditions. Ten minutes with a wire brush and a rattle can in April pays back every winter afterwards.
Hydraulic, electric or manual chute, in practice
This is the specification owners most often wish they had spent more on, so it is worth being concrete about the difference.
Manual means stopping, dismounting, loosening a handle, rotating the chute and remounting. On a short driveway cleared in two passes, fine. On a 100 metre laneway where you throw right on the way out and left on the way back, you will do this eight or ten times per clearing.
Electric rotation runs off the tractor 12V supply and is controlled by a toggle at the seat. It is the most common upgrade and usually the best value.
Hydraulic rotation uses the tractor remotes, is the most robust in deep cold, and typically controls the deflector as well as rotation, so you can adjust throw distance on the move. If you have spare remotes, this is the one to buy.
Working out your real clearing time
A useful estimate: a 60 inch blower on a compact tractor at a sensible working speed clears roughly 900 to 1,400 square metres an hour in average snow, less in deep or wet conditions. A typical rural laneway of 100 metres by 4 metres is 400 square metres, so a single pass system clears it in well under half an hour even allowing for the turn.
Where time actually goes is not the driveway itself but the turnaround areas, the parking apron and the bits around outbuildings. Measure those too when you are sizing, because they often exceed the laneway.
Regional notes
In Quebec and Atlantic Canada, where annual accumulation regularly exceeds 250cm and spring snow is heavy and wet, size up. A 60 inch blower on a 30hp tractor will cope, but a 72 inch on a 45hp machine will finish in half the time and will not bog in March.
On the Prairies, drifting matters more than total accumulation. Intake height and the ability to take a partial bite out of a hard drift matter more than raw width. A narrower blower that can climb into a drift in stages beats a wide one that stalls against it.
In southern Ontario and the Lower Mainland, where accumulation is moderate but wet snow is common, prioritise impeller diameter and chute design over sheer width. Wet snow is a throwing problem, not a collecting problem.
Buying used
Three point hitch blowers hold value well because there is little to go wrong. When inspecting a used unit, check in this order: gearbox for play or milky oil, which indicates water ingress; auger flighting for cracks or previous welding; housing for rust perforation, especially at the bottom edge; the chute rotation ring for wear; and the PTO shaft for straightness and intact guards.
A tired paint job means nothing. A gearbox with play or a perforated housing means walk away.
Front loader, blade or blower
Owners with a front end loader often ask whether they need a blower at all. The loader is faster for moving snow short distances and unbeatable for stacking, but it does not remove snow, it relocates it. On a laneway with room at the sides, a loader plus a rear blade may be all you need. On a laneway lined with trees, fence or ditch, the banks close in by mid winter and you are back to needing a blower.
A rear blade is cheap and fast for pushing, but it leaves windrows and cannot clear the end of a laneway where the municipal plow has left a compacted ridge. Many owners run a blade for light snow and a blower for anything serious, which is a perfectly sensible pairing.
Cab, heat and visibility
If you clear more than a handful of times a season, a cab changes the job entirely. Beyond comfort, it changes how long you are willing to keep working, which in practice means the laneway gets cleared properly rather than adequately. Good lighting matters as much as heat, since most clearing happens before dawn or after dark. Fit work lights front and rear before your first winter rather than discovering the problem during it.
Two common sizing mistakes
The first is buying on engine horsepower rather than PTO horsepower, which overstates capability by 15 to 20 percent. The second is sizing to the driveway rather than the tractor. A blower wider than the tractor can drive will bog constantly and frustrate you, while a slightly narrow one that runs at full speed will out clear it every time.
A note on warranty and dealer support
Three point hitch blowers are simple, but the gearbox is the one component you do not want to be sourcing privately. Before buying, confirm that parts are stocked in Canada rather than shipped from overseas on request, and that a dealer within reasonable distance services the brand. A gearbox rebuild kit that takes six weeks to arrive turns a two week repair into a lost season, and on a rural property that is the difference between clearing your own laneway and paying someone else to.
