The snow blower auger axle is the shaft the auger flighting is welded or bolted to, stock number 303160370. It is an expensive part, and the single most useful thing to know is that it is rarely the thing that has actually failed. If a snow blower auger axle is what you are after, this is the listing and these are the details worth knowing.

This snow blower auger axle in practice
The snow blower auger axle runs the full width of the housing, carried on a bearing at each end, with the gearbox driving it in the middle. The auger flighting is fixed to it, and on most machines the connection is made through shear pins so that the axle survives when the flighting hits something solid.

Everything about that layout is designed to protect the shaft. Shear pins break first. Bearings wear first. The gearbox worm wheel wears first. A snow blower auger axle that is genuinely finished has usually been run for a long time on a failed bearing, or has met something immovable at speed with the wrong hardware in the shear pin holes.

Telling a bent snow blower auger axle from worn bearings
Both produce wobble, noise and uneven clearing, and they are frequently confused. The test separates them in about a minute.
With the power disconnected, take hold of the auger near one end of the housing and try to move it up, down and sideways. Movement you can feel at the end but not at the centre is a worn end bearing. Movement everywhere, with the auger rocking as a unit, is a bearing at both ends or a gearbox problem.
Now rotate the auger slowly by hand and watch the gap between the flighting tip and the housing at a fixed point. On a straight shaft that gap stays constant through the full turn. On a bent snow blower auger axle it opens and closes once per revolution, and you can see it without any tools. That is the only symptom that really points at the shaft.
| What you observe | What it means |
|---|---|
| Play at one end only | That end bearing |
| Play at both ends | Both bearings, or the gearbox |
| Tip to housing gap varies once per turn | Bent axle |
| Grinding that changes with load | Gearbox, not the axle |
| Auger turns freely then stops under load | Sheared pins |
Salt seizure, what really kills a snow blower auger axle
The failure that actually consumes a snow blower auger axle is not impact. It is corrosion at the bearing seats.
Salt laden meltwater finds its way into the bearing housings at each end, sits there over the summer, and rusts the shaft to the bearing inner race. The following winter the bearing no longer turns on the shaft: instead the shaft turns inside a seized bearing, or the whole assembly turns in the housing. Either way the shaft is being machined away by its own bearing, and by the time the noise is obvious the seat is undersized and a new bearing will not hold.
The prevention is unglamorous and takes ten minutes each spring: rinse the housing with clean water only, let it dry fully, and put a smear of grease on any exposed shaft at the bearing ends. Do not power wash into the bearings. Our off season storage guide covers the rest, and Environment and Climate Change Canada climate data will tell you how much salted slush your own location actually generates.
Replacing a snow blower auger axle
Plan on the auger assembly coming out of the housing, which means both end bearings and the gearbox connection. Photograph the order of every washer, spacer and shim before it leaves the machine.
Replace both end bearings while it is apart, without exception. Fitting a new snow blower auger axle into old bearings puts a fresh shaft into worn, possibly corroded races, and the new shaft will pick up the same damage inside a season. The bearings are a small fraction of the axle price and the labour is already spent.
Use genuine shear pins on reassembly. Substituting an ordinary bolt is the single most expensive mistake on this machine, because the pin exists precisely so that the axle and the gearbox survive an impact. Our piece on snow blower shear pins explained explains why, and the snow blower repair guide covers the strip down.
Parts to order with a snow blower auger axle
Never fit a snow blower auger axle on its own. Two things go back with it every time.

Bearing Block-DB7109A PSSAM24 DB7109D PSSW2260LED PSSHH26LED PSSHH24LED PSS2260LED: replace both ends with the shaft, because old races will ruin a new axle.

Dowel Pin (Elastic cylindrical pin ): always refit genuine shear pins, never an ordinary bolt.
Common questions
How do I know whether the snow blower auger axle is bent?
Rotate the auger slowly by hand and watch the gap between the flighting tip and the housing at one fixed point. A straight shaft holds that gap constant. A bent one opens and closes it once per revolution.
My auger wobbles. Do I need a new snow blower auger axle?
Usually not. Play felt at one end of the housing is that end bearing, which is far cheaper. Only a varying tip to housing gap really points at the shaft.
Should I replace the bearings at the same time?
Yes, always. A new shaft in worn or corroded races picks up the same damage within a season, and the labour is already spent.
What actually destroys auger axles?
Salt corrosion at the bearing seats. Meltwater sits in the bearing housings over summer and rusts the shaft to the inner race, after which the bearing machines the shaft.
Can I use a bolt instead of a shear pin?
No. The pin is designed to break so the axle and gearbox survive an impact. A bolt transfers that impact straight into the parts you are trying to protect.
Is this the same as the 24 inch auger axle?
No. Axle length follows the housing width, so a 24 inch machine takes a different shaft. Measure your clearing width and order on stock number.
