Measuring your machine before ordering a 24 inch auger axle

Clearing width is the outside width of the housing opening, measured across the front of the machine at the mouth. It is not the width of the auger flighting, and it is not the width across the wheels or the handlebar, both of which are commonly measured by mistake.

Take the measurement with a tape across the front opening, corner to corner, and round to the nearest inch. Manufacturers quote clearing width in whole inches, so a reading of 23 and a half almost certainly means a 24 inch machine.

Then confirm against the model plate, usually on the rear of the housing or under the handlebar. What the 24 inch auger axle fitment list actually tells you

The DB7659H-22 and DB7651-26 both take this shaft, and the numbers in those codes are worth reading carefully. They do not both describe the same clearing width, which is exactly the trap.

Manufacturer model codes mix series numbers, engine sizes and widths in an order that is not consistent between families. The only safe approach is the one the parts diagram uses: match on the stock number. If your machine is not on the listed fitment, measure the housing and compare against the shaft you are removing before ordering.

The one measurement that settles it is the old shaft itself. Take it out, measure it end to end, and compare. A 24 inch auger axle in the wrong housing either will not span the bearings or will leave the flighting sitting proud of the mouth.

When a 24 inch auger axle is genuinely worth replacing

This is an expensive part on a machine made mostly of cheap ones, so it is worth being deliberate. Three situations justify a new 24 inch auger axle and the strip down that goes with it.

The shaft is visibly bent. Rotate the auger by hand and watch the gap between the flighting tip and the housing at one fixed point. On a straight shaft it stays constant. If it opens and closes once per revolution the shaft is bent, and no amount of new bearings will fix that.

The bearing seats have corroded undersize. Salt laden meltwater rusts the shaft to the bearing inner race over the summer, and the following winter the bearing machines the shaft instead of turning on it. Once the seat is undersized a new bearing will not hold and the shaft is finished.

The shear pin holes have gone oval. Repeated impacts, or somebody running a bolt where a shear pin belonged, elongate the holes. Once they are no longer round the pin cannot shear cleanly at its designed load, so the protection the shaft depends on is gone.

Fitting the 24 inch auger axle

The auger assembly comes out of the housing, so both end bearings and the gearbox connection have to be freed. Photograph the order of every washer, spacer and shim first.

Replace both end bearings at the same time. Salt corrosion at the bearing seats is what consumes these shafts, so the races the old one ran in are the last place to put a new 24 inch auger axle. The bearings are a small fraction of the shaft price and you are already inside the machine.
